Removals to Scotland from Northern Ireland

CrissCross runs removals to Scotland from our depot at Knockmore Industrial Estate in Lisburn, taking homes and businesses across the Irish Sea to Glasgow, Edinburgh and beyond. Every move starts with a free survey, in person or by video, and a fixed price in writing.

Scotland is one of every long-distance route we run. For the capital, see our Belfast to Edinburgh route, or if your plans change, we also cover moving to England.

Removals to Scotland: How the Crossing Works

Sailings to Scotland run from Belfast and Larne to Cairnryan. Belfast to Cairnryan takes around two hours and fifteen minutes, and Larne to Cairnryan around two hours. We book the crossing that fits your collection and delivery dates.

From Cairnryan, Glasgow is roughly two hours by road and Edinburgh around three. A Belfast to Glasgow move can therefore be planned around one sailing and a single drive, with no overnight stop for the crossing itself.

It’s a domestic UK move, so there are no customs declarations. Sailings can be disrupted in bad weather. If that happens, your move goes on the next suitable crossing and we keep you updated.

Chris Magee founded CrissCross in 2016, and a team of seven runs every move from the Lisburn depot. If you’re moving the other way, from Scotland to Northern Ireland, the same process runs in reverse.

Why Choose CrissCross for Your NI to Scotland Move

  • Regular Routes Across the Irish Sea: We run Scotland moves regularly and book the crossing around your dates, not the other way round.
  • Full Loads or Part Loads: Take the whole vehicle for a house move, or share space on a part load and pay only for the room your items use.
  • Packing and Storage: Choose full or partial packing, and use storage at our Lisburn depot if your Scottish home isn’t ready yet.
  • A Fixed Price in Writing: Your survey covers what you’re taking and the access at both ends, so the price we confirm is the price you pay.

Glasgow and Edinburgh: Planning for Tenements

Most of our Scottish deliveries go to Glasgow and Edinburgh, and many of those are to tenement flats. Tenements bring their own access questions.

Common stairs. Tenements in Glasgow’s West End and Edinburgh’s New Town and Marchmont usually share a stone stair with no lift. We check the floor level, the turns on the stair and the size of your largest items at the survey.

Parking. Many tenement streets sit in controlled parking zones. A removal vehicle may need a parking suspension from the council, so we tell you at the survey whether you need one and how far ahead to apply.

Houses beyond the cities. We also deliver further afield, including the Highlands. Timings for longer routes are confirmed when we quote.

Before You Move to Scotland

If you’re buying in Scotland, your date of entry is agreed in the missives, often weeks ahead. Book your move as soon as it’s set.

Register with your new Scottish council once you have a move-in date.

Register with a GP near your new home through NHS Scotland.

The Scottish school year starts in mid-August, earlier than in Northern Ireland, so check term dates if you have children.

Northern Ireland licences are issued by the DVA, so check the DVLA’s rules for updating your licence after a move to Great Britain.

Set up mail redirection and arrange broadband, gas and electricity at the new address.

Your Questions About Moving to Scotland

No. Northern Ireland and Scotland are both in the UK, so a move between them is a domestic move with no customs declarations. The only difference from a move within Northern Ireland is the ferry crossing.

Sailings to Scotland run from Belfast and Larne to Cairnryan. Belfast to Cairnryan takes around two hours and fifteen minutes, and Larne to Cairnryan around two hours. We book the crossing that fits your collection and delivery dates.

After the crossing, Glasgow is roughly two hours by road from Cairnryan and Edinburgh around three. Your collection and delivery days depend on the sailing and the access at both ends, and we confirm them in writing after your survey.

Yes. Your belongings share space on a vehicle with another move heading the same way, so you only pay for the space you use. It suits flats and smaller moves, with a delivery window of two to three days rather than a fixed day.

Yes. We keep your belongings in self-contained storage at our Lisburn depot and deliver them once you have the keys. Tell us at the survey and we will build storage into your fixed price.

For a full load, four to six weeks ahead is comfortable, and earlier for summer, bank holidays and end-of-month dates. If you are buying in Scotland, your date of entry is agreed in the missives, often weeks in advance, so you can usually book as soon as it is set.

Sometimes. Many tenement streets in both cities sit in controlled parking zones, where a removal vehicle may need a parking suspension from the council. We check both addresses at the survey and tell you whether one is needed and how far ahead to apply.
